Interested in food service and people? Staff needed to assist with the food distribution process at the Mobile Meals Kitchen, including packing meals and staging coolers for pick up by volunteers for delivery to Senior Nutrition clients. Will provide support for congregate meal sites, including serving as host for various group meal sites; provide mobile meal route delivery when needed. This individual represents the Senior Nutrition Program daily with direct interaction with volunteers, guests and kitchen staff. Must have a working knowledge of the geographic area of Knox County and a valid Tennessee driver license and a reliable automobile available for daily use (mileage reimbursed). Position is generally 30-40 hours per week (6-8 hours per day). High school diploma or equivalent is required. Must be able to read and perform math at a tenth-grade level or above. Must possess computer, tablet, and smart phone skills.

Qualifications: Preferred qualifications include an Associate’s Degree or post-secondary education. Experience in food service is desirable

Job Title: Nutrition Associate II

Summary: An employee in this classification receives supervision from the Nutrition Coordinator, Nutrition Manager and Director. Work is performed on a part-time or full-time basis w/ benefits (6-8 hours a day) mostly Monday-Friday but also includes some weekend days, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Responsibilities include packing, delivery and direct service of meals and food distribution to clients. This position provides front-line customer service with clients and volunteers, provides follow-up to staff, clients and volunteers, and is cross-trained in basic food service, food distribution, delivery jobs, and has proficient computer skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Cross-trained to serve as host for multiple congregate meal sites, O’Connor Senior Center, and other food distribution locations. Provides direct provision of food service and clean up. Includes mobile meal route delivery when needed.
  • Cross-trained in numerous roles to ensure accurate daily food distribution.
  • Cross-trained and serves in back-up office role answering phone, locating clients, and providing office support with supervision. Responds appropriately to phone calls.
  • Pack meals and stage food items for distribution by staff or volunteers.
  • Adjusts food orders, meal routes and food deliveries including meal, milk, and additional items based on client changes. When applicable, collects and reviews previous day’s orders and adjusts for current day meal service.
  • Follows meal order to adjust the count based on reservations and cancellations. Communicate all changes to nutrition staff in a timely manner.
  • Counts and checks all food items before leaving distribution point or upon receipt to ensure accurate food distribution and service.
  • When required, disposes of or returns food items for proper record keeping.
  • Maintains work area cleanliness and completes cleaning assignments as assigned.
  • Monitors food quality and record/report all related food safety requirements, including potential food borne illness information. (Temperatures, Times, Dates, Food Service Logs, etc.) Handles food in a safe and sanitary manner.
  • Completes and submits all required paperwork necessary for accurate client records. Performs data entry of applications. Work with Coordinator and Manager to collect congregate demographics, services, annual assessment dates and other pertinent information for required databases.
  • Daily preparation of route sheets and site paperwork to all distribution points.
  • Communicates and interacts with Nutrition staff as needed on all issues, especially as they relate to food acceptability, volunteer relations and client satisfaction completing all required reports and logs.
  • Greets and assists clients in filling out required applications. (Assessments, applications, etc.)
  • Reviews applications for accuracy. Contacts clients when necessary to verify and update information.
  • Records and submits attendance, food orders and food distribution logs on required forms. Completes forms in a legible manner.
  • Collects client contributions when applicable. Follows CAC procedures when handling contributions.
  • When errors occur, makes the necessary correction and report to supervisor.
  • Communicates and interacts with staff at the food distribution location to ensure a positive relationship with the management at each food distribution location.
  • Responds appropriately to any volunteer, client crisis or emergency. Relays information to the proper supervisor or authorities as instructed.
  • Performs other duties as required by supervisor.

Knowledge and Abilities:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Ability to serve or distribute food sources and meals to all program participants according to established rules and guidelines.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with assistance; physical exam required (paid by CAC).
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, schedule or diagram form.
  • Ability to obtain facts by personal contact and observation, reporting them as instructed.
  • Must be dependable and mature with a pleasant personality and professional appearance.
  • Ability to adhere to established guidelines and procedures, and have good prior work record.
  • Must have excellent time and attendance.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule.
  • Valid TN Driver’s License required with daily use of a reliable personal vehicle preferred. Mileage reimbursed.
  • Must have working knowledge of the geographic area of Knox County.
  • Reading and math skills at or above a tenth-grade level.
  • Must have proficient computer, tablet and smart-phone skills.
  • Serve safe certification is required.

Base Qualifications: Must have high school diploma, GED or equivalent work experience. Driving required in all aspects of this job.

Preferred Qualifications: Post-secondary education classes or Associate degree. Food service and/or customer service experience. Work experience with the elderly, other vulnerable populations, or volunteers.
