Energy and Housing Services Needs Your Help!

How YOU Can Help:

Donate fans to one or more of the 250 people still without fans in the summer heat. Many low income elderly struggle with a large energy burden when you look at the ratio of total income spent on energy costs.

Why are Seniors Particularly At-Risk?

Seniors spend a large amount of their limited income on trying to stay cool or warmdepending on the season. Often in the heat of summer, they will not open the windows to ventilate the rooms even if it is sweltering. Often they feel vulnerable due to the fact that they live alone and opening a window poses a security risk.

Heat is more dangerous to the elderly because their bodies do not respond as well as a younger person to extreme temperatures--causing heat exhaustion.

Heat Relief on Its Way:

CAC operates the local Heat Relief Program that collects fans and money then distributes them to Knoxville and Knox County residents who are most vulnerable to heat associated distress. You can reach Cecelia Waters, Director of Energy Assistance Programs at CAC at 637-6700 to answer any questions or to make a donation. You can also contact her by email at cecelia.waters@knoxcac.org.
