Senior Nutrition Program Stories

Mrs. R is a 94-year-old widow who has received Mobile Meals for three years.  She has outlived her family, friends and neighbors.  Severe arthritis has limited her mobility, and she is unable to leave her house.  She spends her days in a chair beside the window, watching religious television programs.  Mrs. R. counts on the Mobile Meals program to meet her basic needs.  In addition to the daily meal, the Mobile Meals volunteers provide her with a link to the outside world by taking the time to visit with her and to check on her well-being.  Mrs. R. has been able to remain in her home through the support she receives from the Mobile Meals program.  When asked about the help that she receives, Mrs. R. stated, “People are good, I think.  People are real good, way deep inside.  I sure know they’ve been good to me, and I say thank you and I love you.”

Mr. and Mrs. B are 81 and 77 years old, respectively.  She is wheelchair bound and he is her caregiver.  Both are diabetic.  He has difficulty walking when his arthritis is “acting up,” he says.  Then he uses a cane.  However, standing to cook a complete meal is too much for either of them.  He does well to manage the microwave and cereal and milk in the mornings.

Both Mr. and Mrs. B are very grateful for Mobile Meals.  “Without the meals and the friendly visits, we would be lonely and unable to get the good nourishing food like meat and vegetables that you send,” explained Mr. B.  “We look forward to seeing the different people who deliver the meals.  We’ve made many new friends.  When my wife is having a rough morning, she’ll put forth an extra effort to get up in her wheelchair so that she won’t miss their visit.”

The couple began receiving Mobile Meals in 2002 after both were hospitalized.  When they came home, neither could prepare food.  Family helped until Mobile Meals were started.  All of the family members work.  None of them are available every day to help.

A disabled veteran, Mr. B declares they want to stay in their home and not have to go to a nursing home

Mr. A always greeted the Mobile Meals volunteers with a cheerful smile, even before his bed-wheel chair bound wife died three years ago.  He was determined (with the help of Mobile Meals) to take care of his wife at home and not send her to a nursing home.  He succeeded!  (Since 1997, he faithfully cared for her, but he was always quick to say that he didn’t know what he would have done without Mobile Meals).

His wife was diabetic and he always tried so hard to meet he diabetic food requirements.  Mobile Meals really helped him achieve her nutritional diabetic needs.

He is now 85 years old.  He had no children.  His wife had one daughter and one granddaughter.  Both live out of town and rarely come to visit.
