Mission Statement:

To serve to create safe, clean, and healthy neighborhood environments through education, collaboration and action; to instill high levels of individual and neighborhood responsibility teaching children and youth healthy environmental practices that lead to an increase in food security, ecologically healthier urban watersheds, a decrease in solid waste, and an increase in academic skills through service learning.

Accomplishments:

CAC AmeriCorps has cleaned creeks removing over 350 tons of trash, educated over 18,000 youth on the environment, built 24 outdoor classrooms, recycled over 600 tons of waste from low-income schools, taught
24 low-income families about gardening and nutrition, and mobilized over 25,000 volunteers. Let’s just say,
“We get things done.” CAC AmeriCorps was awarded the Knoxville News-Sentinel Environmental Achievement Award in 2000 and in 2005, we received the Excellence in Environmental Education and Outreach Award from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.

Through CAC AmeriCorps service:

Each year over 9,000 of Knoxville’s youth are educated about their local environment and are engaged in projects to improve it. Knoxville and Knox County communities are cleaner, greener, and more beautiful through neighborhood cleanups, creek restorations, and community gardens. Most importantly, people are volunteering more than ever to improve their roadsides, waterways, neighborhoods, historic public spaces, and community parks.
